Why buy Mexican Insurance?

Before leaving the U.S., you should ask if your U.S., insurance policy will cover your vehicle in Mexico. If so, ask if the policy has restrictions or limitations in this regard, such as miles from the border or number of days in Mexico.

We recommend you to buy a Mexico Auto Insurance Policy from someone you know and trust such as Genworth Seguros Tourist Auto Insurance.

Important: Whether or not your U.S. or Canadian Auto Insurance covers you in Mexico, you should purchase "Liability Only" coverage from a Mexican Insurance Company. The liability coverage on your U.S. or Canadian Insurance is not recognized by Mexican Authorities.

Mexican Laws:

Mexico does not have compulsory automobile insurance. The basic difference between Mexico's and the United States financial responsibility law is that anyone involved in an accident in Mexico must have the means to respond to damage or injuries for which they may be responsible which in Mexico would be in either form: cash or a Mexican Insurance Policy.

American and Canadian insurance companies or policies are not recognized in Mexico. Only authorized Mexican insurance companies are considered legal in Mexico. According to the Mexican law, all traffic accidents are considered both civil and criminal offenses. Visitors going beyond the border show the title of property or an authorization letter from the owner of the vehicle to enter the country.

Purchasing Mexican Insurance:

Mexican automobile insurance is sold in most cities and towns on both sides of the border. We recommend that you purchase your Mexican insurance online from a company that you know and trust such as Genworth Seguros.

The Mexican Government doesn't currently require a vehicle to have auto insurance, however, Liability Only is highly recommended as a minimum for your protection.

Mexican insurance policies generally offer the same types of coverage as policies sold in the United States.
